Yea you will need a good system.
Atm. Try a sandybridge I7.
A 2gb AMD 5850 or 5870.
6gb+ of ram.
An SSD for games.
A HDD or several for your programs, storage & OS.

yeah i spent $1.8k on my new rig with bf3 in mind, and it runs it on all ultra smooth, i get some texture popping here and there when im looking down a high power scope, but nothing that hinders gameplay.
im only running one gfx card at the moment but i plan on going sli with a 2nd one soonish

Machete and Altimadem, would you be able to post your pc components and where you got them, as I am looking at upgrading mine/helping a friend upgrade his, and my friend is dead set on the idea that a pc under 3k wouldnt run bf3. (plus will make my life a lot easier with another opinion). thanks

bought my pc for bf3, total was $2,200
Intel Core i5 2500K
Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB
CoolerMaster Hyper 212+
Seagate 1TB
EVGA GTX570 DS HD
Corsair HX750
24" Samsung LED monitor
imo if i was you i would go with the i5 2500k over the i7 and spend the money you save on a better gfx card.. just my opinion though.

$1.8k was the cost including the monitor too, so its closer to $1.6k all up.
Corsair 750w (CMPSU-750HX), nice power supply this, came in its own fake velvet sack...
GeForce GTX 570 revision 2 128mb grafix card, $365 and ill get a 2nd when it comes down in price
Fractal Design R3 case, very nice to build a computer in, has soundproofing and plenty of space
16gig of G.Skill DDR3 ram
Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3RB3 1155 socket mobo
Intel core i7 2600 3.4ghz processor (easy to overclock, comes with its own bios adjusting program)
OCZ 60gig SSD drive for windows and main programs/games to run and load nice and fast off of. makes a big difference for all loading times.
Samsung 1tb hardrive for everything else.
got it from scorpion technology, a growing melbourne computer chain. my mate is head of sales there, got discounts all over the place and he built the thing for me, he used to be their main system builder

Just offtopic here:
Were teh servers down for a bit ? Most have 0 players atm. But they must be back up because I see people on some servers again.

EA ran an update for an hour and all were down yeah
and it's easy to get a BF3 comp for under 2 Gs
and btw my comp is a 6 year old top of the line (then) comp and all I need to do us update the graphics card, CHECK YOUR COMPs to see if a mod to it is cheaper with those intentions in mind.
There are more ways than throwing money at the problem
